Bert Stern began his illustrious photography career in1950’s and quickly became a rising star in the world of Advertising & Fashion photography. Working along side Stanley Kubrick, Irving Penn, Avedon, and mentor Art Director Herschel Bramson, he acquired clients such as Smirnoff Vodka, I. Miller, and Dansk. His conceptual, creatively fueled Ad work was featured in LIFE Magazine and soon all of Madison Avenue wanted to work with him. Bert got his own studio, and took on client such as I. Miller, Dansk, VOGUE, McCalls, Pepsi Cola, Volkswagen & Levis. His highly acclaimed celebrity portraiture includes the likes of Louis Armstrong, Twiggy, Audrey Hepburn, Richard Burton, Liz Taylor, and Gary Cooper to name a few.
Stern is the last photographer to do a studio shoot of Marilyn Monroe that took place over three months during two session over four days at The Bel Air Hotel. The final shoot date completed June 21st 1962. Vogue magazine would publish ten Black & White photographs of Marilyn Monroe in a Black Dior Dress, in their September issue, 1962. The Art Director chose the images before he knew the tragic news of Marilyn Monroe’s passing on August 1st 1962. It was too late for the Magazine to stop the presses and the publication would become a haunting and somber memorial for the starlet. This series of photographs would become known as ‘The Last Sitting ®’
